September in Bath: it’s all about literature

Poetry, prose or great big novels; it’s an art form that can offer much-needed escapism.
If there’s one city in the UK that knows these facts better than most, it’s Bath. Each September the city welcomes not one, but two literature festivals, after all.
Between 14 and 23 September, The Jane Austen Festival returns to Bath for its 19th year, and shortly after, the Bath Children’s Literature Festival will arrive. Here’s a taste of what to expect.
The Jane Austen Festival 2019 | Saturday 14 September to Monday 23 September
This year, the Jane Austen festival will celebrate the novel Lady Susan with a 10-day schedule of exciting activities, talks, readings, workshops and walks.
First, spectate the Grand Regency Costumed Promenade – or take part yourself! Dress in your finest C18th costume and join the Saturday morning parade with His Majesty’s 33rd Regiment of Foot and Bath’s town crier.
Later, enjoy Austen Undone! - a theatrical comedy walk through the Georgian streets of the city with the award-winning Natural Theatre Company.
Throughout the week, hear chapter readings at Waterstones Bookshop, create your own Austen-themed accessories or sample the delights of a C18th public breakfast. Find the full festival schedule on the website or keep up to date on social media.
Bath Children’s Literature Festival | Friday 27 September to Sunday 6 October
Want to get the kids excited about literature? Now’s your chance. Europe’s largest dedicated children’s literature festival is back, and the line-up is huge.
Dozens of children’s authors, illustrators and presenters will be passing through the city for book readings, talks and performances. But beware: each listing requires advanced booking and some have already sold out!
On Saturday 28 September, catch TV Burp host-turned children’s author Harry Hill at The Forum or join Aardman for Shaun the Sheep model-making workshops.
Or meet David Melling, the creator of illustrated sensation Hugless Douglas at the Cricket Club!
Later in the week, hear from writing legend Jacqueline Wilson or sit down with broadcaster and former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq for live draw-along and brain-busting quizzes.
