Touring opera company Pop-Up Opera brings Mozart to the masses at Bath Assembly Rooms on Wednesday 11th July.

Directed by the critically acclaimed Anna Pool, New British Music Theatre Award nominee, Pop-Up Opera are showcasing not one but two of Mozart’s works when the bring their production to Bath this summer.  Anna is known for her bold directing style.

Written when the composer was 12-years-old Bastien und Bastienne is one of Mozart’s earliest operas and, in contrast, Der Schauspieldirektor was written towards the end of the composer’s life.  Both operas are what Mozart described as “comedy with music” and this production of them together as a double bill sees two actresses sing it out to be crowned prima donna and a pair of lovers flirting with their feelings.  These are great examples of the composer’s wit and both are lively and engaging scores.

Pop-Up Opera was founded in 2011 by Clementine Lovell and has grown to produce 90 performances a year.  More than just opera Pop-Up Opera makes opera accessible, engaging and relevant to both die hard opera fans and new audiences.  As well as traditional theatres they have performed in a number of unusual and quirky spaces including a boat and a cider barn and now Bath’s very own Assembly Rooms.

To celebrate in style as the Assembly Rooms are also offering a range of hospitality packages.  On arrival from 6pm you can enjoy a glass of English sparkling wine before indulging in a choice of three extensive tasting plates - charcuterie, mezze or smoked fish - before finishing it off with two delectable desserts.
