Victoria Pub & Kitchen on Upper Bristol Road in Bath is an award-winning pub restaurant serving fresh food in a slightly quieter area of the city. Read on to see what we thought about their food and atmosphere when we went along:

This is a gastro pub opposite the skateboarding area of Victoria Park. I used to walk past it when it was a regular local. I never went in because it was obviously a very male domain but one of the things that struck me as welcoming, on my recent visit, is how both the contemporary decor and seating arrangements have allowed space for both the old and the new. Outside there is a well-kept sheltered area for smokers and inside, to the right, a good sized nook with a TV for the footie and rugby fans (close to the bar). We sat in an adjoining room, in ease and comfort, not disturbed by noise. In fact piped music was also absent and we really noticed how much easier it was to let conversation flow.

Victoria Pub & Kitchen - BathWhat the Victoria Kitchen seemed to be aiming at, being placed outside the city centre, is offering something to locals, regulars and newcomers. A smart and chic place, without being pretentious, as was reflected in the menus. There is an early bird menu and a somewhat fuller one, for later in the evening. Good sized burgers with salad and chips mainly feature along with specials. The menu is not extensive and the vegetarian options are limited to soups and a couple of main dishes, but what they do offer they focus on doing well.

We enjoyed starters of fried squid rings with lime mayonnaise – clearly freshly prepared to order - and a homemade, course textured, ham terrine. For mains my partner commented on his ‘beautifully crispy’ pork belly on a bed of mash with stilton sauce. I went for the ‘home made’ again – fagotts and mash – funny old fashioned meatballs and just the ticket too! Warm, tasty and filling. Pub grub, if you like, but that’s no slander when it is elevated to restaurant standard.

The bar stocks a good range of ciders (yes please, this is Somerset!) and beers, local and national. The wine list, though short, complemented the menu.

As I looked around me I saw families, groups of friends, couples, and one long table in a beautifully decorated room (once the skittle ally I think) with an office or family party going on. The atmosphere was relaxed and the service timely and friendly. This is the sort of place that would be easy to drop in on for a drink or a meal. A meal for two, of two courses with a large glass of wine each, came in at around £60.00 which we thought was good quality and good value.
