It isn’t that there are no curry houses in Bath, there are several good ones, but this was different – a supper club at the newly extended Thoughtful Bread Company.

On the night of ‘Curry Feast’ we were welcomed into an atmospheric, candle lit room by Darren and Mia, the thoughtful and youthful managers. Having gone into the shop several times during the day, I often wondered if I might ever get in to the new café in the extension, it seems to have taken off so well. But part of the deal with the supper clubs is that you book ahead, you buy a ticket, and places are limited so on the night a special ambiance is created where you can sit unhurried, in comfort and chat to other foodies. There were five tables set with some space between, enough to stay separate if you wished but close enough to chat to your neighbour, which we happily did. As it happened, couples were present but larger parties could be catered for.

For those of you that might have come across Jack Santa Maria’s classic book ‘Indian Vegetarian Cookery’ this delicious way of preparing curries will be familiar to you. My point here is that the food was not oily or chilly hot but gently spiced and fragrant. The supper club menu was set with three courses and coffee or tea at the end. For the mains there was a choice of slow cooked lamb or smoked paneer with a lovely chickpea curry. The hosts took trouble over the guests, pointing out that this was not vegan and answering any questions about the food. I loved the novelty of the bright edible flowers sitting on top of the dessert. Somehow this was a spring feast, the first of many good evenings out in Bath to be had.

But the main feature of the Thoughtful Bread Company has to be that all the breads and cakes are made on the premises. Consequently we had freshly prepared flat breads and naans to accompany the other delicious dishes.

It's £30 pp and although they can't sell alcohol you are allowed to bring your own to consume at the supper clubs (which they will keep chilled for you while you eat) I thought this very good value and look forward to sampling other club events such as the outrageous ‘Pudding Party’ in April. See the website for details of their upcoming events.
