Beautiful 5 star food in an exceptional countryside setting

Lucknam Park is a 5 star hotel on the outskirts of Bath and is famous all over the world for its beautiful spa and acres of stunning land surrounding it. But what drew us in was the well-renowned food at The Brasserie, one of two restaurants at the hotel, so we went along for a three course meal to find out if it’s worth travelling out of Bath’s centre for.

The Brasserie at Lucknam Park

The Brasserie is the more casual of the two restaurants at Lucknam Park Hotel and has a wonderful welcoming feel to it, in part thanks to the huge glass doors that open up to a lovely outdoor seating area. Of course in the winter it’s not much fun sitting outside but the inside is warm, inviting and cosy. It’s modern and contemporary but still in keeping with its countryside surroundings, with a fireplace, a comfortable sofa seating area for drinks and a small flower on each table; a nice touch.

There are a few menus to choose from and there’s even a great value set menu with two courses for £24 or three courses for £27. It’s quite a small set menu as you’d expect but there is plenty to choose from on the other menus including some healthy options. For a light starter I recommend the wood roast tiger prawn skewers, satay sauce and crispy lotus root (£9) as the roasted flavour in the prawns is delicate and pairs well with the lovely peanut satay sauce. The prawns are served on a bed of lettuce and various shavings of sweet and bitter vegetables that make for an interesting flavour combination, but it’s splendid. Alternatively the Burford brown scotch egg with homemade tomato ketchup (£8.50) is tasty and made the way a scotch egg should be, with a thin breadcrumb coating so that the egg is not lost.

It was difficult to choose which main course to have because everything sounded so good, but after much deliberation I settled on the wood-stone calzone stuffed with caramelised onion, crumbled goats cheese and onion marmalade served with a side of watercress (£15). I adore goats cheese so this course was heaven because the calzone was filled to the edges with the beautifully creamy but slightly tangy cheese. No sign of a burnt crust, the calzone was cooked golden brown and was big enough to feed two people, so it’s fantastic value for money especially as it was without a doubt the best calzone I’ve ever had.

We also tried a healthier option, the lemongrass and ginger poached chicken with avocado, pineapple, honey and poppy seed yogurt (£13). Completely opposite to my calzone this deconstructed salad was light, sweet and zingy and doesn’t fill you up too much. It’s a good size portion, but nothing like the calzone so it really depends on how hungry you are. That being said the salad was another interesting combination of flavours, much like my starter, and it was summery and delightful.

And now for the main event, the desserts. There’s a handful to choose from including sticky toffee pudding and even local farmhouse cheeses served with tomato chutney. But the Tahitian vanilla crème brûlée (£8.50) sounded particularly appetising to me, and my dining partner went for something a little unique – the plum and Bannerdown sloe gin cheesecake with plum sorbet (£8.50). As with all of our meals the service was quick and the food was fresh, which can even be said about the desserts as they taste homemade in the best way. The seeds from the vanilla pod are visible in the crème brûlée because the flavour is just right, not too strong or too weak. The caramelised topping was perfect and overall the dessert was beautifully creamy and moreish. It’s also a very large portion, compared to most restaurants, so there’s just more of it to eat which is a bonus! The cheesecake was tasty but not too rich, though I think the plum sorbet stole the show. If you like fruity desserts you’ll love this one and it’s so unique you just have to try it.

You are offered coffees to finish off the whole meal, if you can stomach anymore because you’ll probably be far too full like we were. The coffee is served with little fudgy pieces of chocolate, which is a typical Lucknam Park added touch. I have to say the service was impeccable, not only were our servers friendly and welcoming, drinks are poured for you (5 star service isn’t just limited to hotel guests) and our waitress made sure to check up on us a few times which was lovely. If you’re looking for somewhere special to take your friends or family, or a date with your partner, then the Brasserie will help you create fabulous memories.
