Flavoursome food in a charming romantic setting

There are few Thai restaurants and Koh Thai is one of the most established in Bath. Read on for our review of the food they cooked up for us:

Each Koh Thai restaurant oozes its own personality and unique charm depending on the locality it’s in. This is why the Bath restaurant is classy and romantic. The low lighting, thanks to the candles, creates a cosy atmosphere and there are Buddha statues and artwork scattered around. It makes you feel comfortable and relaxed.

There are a lot of tapas options on the menu, including a good range of vegetarian options, but the thing that stood out for us is the 2 course platter that costs between £22 and £26 depending on what you order. With this you get a range of tapas followed by a main course, so it’s amazing value seeing as tapas are a minimum of £5.50 each. You get a really unique and special experience if you opt for this because you can suggest the kinds of foods you like, whether you have any dietary requirements and so on, then the chefs surprise you with 3 tapas dishes per person to start.

As my dining guest is vegetarian we had a big plate of vegetable tempura to share, I had prawn tempura aswell and chicken satay. The vegetables were pleasantly crunchy underneath the batter, as I was worried they would be mushy, and they were moreish too. The prawns were juicy, paired perfectly with the wonderful sweet chilli sauce and the chicken satay was divine. The satay sauce is apparently the pride and joy of the chefs and is made fresh according to a specific recipe. It was the best satay sauce I’ve ever had because it tasted like peanut butter, with lots of flavour, unlike some bland versions I’ve had in other restaurants. I wish I could have that satay sauce every day with my dinner, it was that good.

The vegetarian options were delicious and what my friend hoped for. She finds that in a lot of restaurants they struggle to create tasty vegetarian options that can compete with their meat counterparts, but Koh Thai exceeded her expectations. The sweetcorn cakes and vegetable spring rolls were full of flavour. Waiting for our main courses was actually quite exciting because we didn’t know what we were going to get. We put out trusts in the chef, and we’re glad we did. We were given two dishes each for a main course, so for how much you pay you get a hell of a lot of food. I was given prawn stir-fry which was beautifully flavoured, a little on the salty side but nothing to worry about and it enhanced the flavour. My friend was given the cashew stir-fry which is made with crispy greens, smoked chilies, cashews and pineapple pieces in the house stir-fry sauce. No complaints were had at all, she was thoroughly pleased with the tastiness of the stir fry and would order it again. As if we weren’t full enough I also had a sweet Massamann curry, made with new potatoes, lamb and peanuts, and my friend had some fantastic vegetable tofu rice which I sampled. It had big chunks of tofu and broccoli, it was packed full of flavour and even though I’m not vegetarian I would happily order that as a main and devour it all next time.

Koh Thai are not only big on flavour but on portion size too. You’ll also be pleased to know they have a great Valentine’s Day offer on, so if I were you I’d get booking now before you miss out.
