When it comes to cake making and decorating there's a class to suit all abilities and interests!

The Bath Cake Company was founded in 2010 by award-winning cake designer Celia Adams. Not only do they make beautiful bespoke cakes for all occasions (you only need to take a look at their window displays to see how amazing their cakes are), but they hold regular classes for everything from cake decorating to getting a PME Professional Diploma. We went along to try our hand at making sugarpaste models and find out what the classes here are like…

The Bath Cake Company is in a great location, in the centre of Bath and near to Milsom Street, so whether you’re getting there by train (like some of my classmates did) or getting the Park and Ride from Lansdown like I did, you’ll find it easy to get here. I was greeted by the lovely teacher Sarah, who until recently had been running her own wedding cake business but now devotes her time to her classes at the Bath Cake Company. The tables were all set with the equipment we would be needing for the next three hours of sugarpaste model making, and it all looked very intriguing especially as I had never done anything like this before.

Before we got started Sarah helpfully explained the difference between the types of paste you can buy to make cake models, and some little tricks on how to get the best out of your creations. Then off we went to start creating a sweet little teddy bear, perfect for a baby’s christening party or a toddler’s birthday. If you’re a complete novice at this kind of thing, like I was, it’s absolutely fine because Sarah showed the class each step slowly and encouraged us to take our time. Once you start to see your creation come to life, with eyes and ears, it really is quite satisfying. We used a variety of tools and you get to learn how you can create the concave effect of a bear’s ears, or the realistic look of the paws. As we were putting on the details of the bear’s features I found myself concentrating hard to make sure it turned out exactly how I wanted it to look, and I’m very proud of how good the finished product looks; particularly seeing as I had never done this before!

Although there was no break allocated to us (the class was three hours long in total, from 9am to 12pm), there was free tea and coffee for us to help ourselves to and even little squares of red velvet cake; so the atmosphere was relaxed and comforting.

We went onto our next sugarpaste creation, copying the unicorn that Sarah had made earlier. We were all in awe of how amazing it looked, but once we started making it I was surprised at how quickly I had gotten the hang of the process, and actually found it quite easy because making the teddy bear was like a practice run. When it was finished, I think we had all learned from any mistakes we had made with the teddy bear, so all of our unicorn creations looked fantastic.

We were given our models to take home, packaged in a box, but not before we took pictures of all of our models together on one table. It was nice to feel a sense of accomplishment and that we had all learnt this together. There were about 10 of us in the class, all women, so it was friendly and quite intimate, and our teacher Sarah was wonderful. She teaches most of the classes here so if you had any reserves about shelling out for one of the classes, you needn’t be worried and we know first hand that you will have so much fun here. You can even head upstairs to their little shop afterwards and buy some tools so you can continue testing out your newfound skills at home!

Prices vary for each class. Take a look at the list of classes at the Bath Cake Company here.
